Este o planta tropicala perena originara din Africa de Est, din sudul Kenyei pana in nord-estul Africii de Sud. Mediul natural al plantei consta din soluri stancoase in zonele joase sau la poalele muntilor. Zamioculcas este o planta care rezista perioade lungi fara apa, alternand cu ploi torentiale. In timpul ploilor torentiale, planta stocheaza rapid apa in rezervoarele sale pentru a putea sa se descurce timp de saptamani. Zamioculcas se poate dezvolta si la lumina mai scazuta, dar creste si se dezvolta mai repede la lumina moderata. In aer liber, planta creste bine in lumina indirecta a soarelui sau intr-o locatie unde lumina soarelui de dimineata este prezenta iar dupa-amiaza este umbra. Udarea. Se realizeaza moderat, lasand ca primii 3-4 cm ai substratului sa se usuce intre doua udari. De asemenea, nu este indicat ca apa sa stagneze in tavita ghiveciului.
