Arbore mic, cu o înălțime variabilă între 3 și 5 metri, o creștere lentă, foarte ramificată, cu ramuri unghiulare. Frunzele sunt ovale mici, piezoase de culoare verde închis la partea de sus și mai deschise pe partea inferioară, cu inserție în ramuri. Florile sunt asemănătoare cu cele ale pomilor portocali de alte genuri. Ele pot apărea solitare sau împreună cu până la patru flori, în timpul primăverii până în vară. Fructele produse au variate forme în funcție de soi, au coajă subțire, pulpă suculentă cu una sau două semințe, gust dulce acidulat.
