Dafinul este un arbore mediteraneean si a fost venerat în perioada romană. Îi era dedicat zeului Apollo, iar din ramurile lui înfrunzite se împleteau cununi purtate de împăraţii romani. Florile masculine şi cele feminine cresc pe copaci separaţi, care pot atinge 20 m înălţime. Frunzele tari, ovale sunt plăcut aromate şi se folosesc drept arome în bucătărie. Florile sunt galbene, iar fructul este o bacă neagră care conţine doar o sămânţă. Frunzele sunt culese de pe ramurile tinere în timpul verii, iar apoi sunt uscate pentru a fi folosite în infuzii. Ele furnizează şi un ulei esenţial, iar fructele se culeg când se coc, în octombrie şi noiembrie, şi produc un ulei numit unt de dafin.
