Butia capitata de-a lungul timpului, formează un palmier cu o siluetă masivă: coarda se extinde peste diametrul de 40 cm, iar coroana, care poate include circa treizeci de palmieri, are o lățime mai mare de 4 m. Coarda poartă reziduurile de frunze deshidratate vechi, în cele din urmă căderi după aproximativ douăzeci de ani și arată o coadă dură. Este plantat în grădină în primăvară, cu o sursă de nisip grosier care optimizează drenajul. Acesta va fi rezistent la frig, imediat ce este bine înrădăcinat. Creșterea este destul de lentă, de ordinul a 3 până la 4 palmieri pe an.
